OpenSolaris Developer Summit May '08
The second OpenSolaris Developer Summit was held at UCSC on 3rd and 4th of May 2008. Sponsored by Sun Microsystems and hosted by The Baskin School of Engineering, the summit is not a traditional conference or exhibition, but rather an in-person, collaborative working session to plan the future of OpenSolaris.
Details of this event including hotel, location and schedule are available on the Developer Summit webpage. If you have any questions about the summit, please email opensolaris-summit@opensolaris.org. Also, if you haven't already done so, please join the opensolaris-summit alias when registering.
If you would like to suggest topics for a break-out session or help with the organization of the summit, opensolaris-summit@opensolaris.org join our mailing list, . While some of the break-out sessions will be organized during the summit, we will have space to schedule specific topics in advance of the weekend.

Session Abstracts
| Session | Abstract |
|---|---|
| Storage |
The OpenSolaris storage community is really growing. During this discussion we plan to share our community growth experiences. We also plan to discuss the new technologies and how OpenSolaris is becoming a premier storage OS. |
| Project Nightingale: Porting Songbird to OpenSolaris | Discussion and demo of Songbird, a cross-platform desktop media player based off of Mozilla's Firefox/XULRunner platform. We'll talk about the porting effort, the current state of Songbird, and its future roadmap. We'll demo some of the unique features of Songbird and how it can be extended via add-ons and webpage integrations to mash-up media and web experiences. |
| Open HA Cluster | This session will give an overview of the HA Clusters community and the Open High Availability Cluster source code base. Learn about the active projects, such as HA-xVM, and upcoming efforts, such as Open HA Cluster on Indiana, and help brainstorm future directions. What features would you like to see in the OpenSolaris high availability cluster code? |
| HCL Program Overview | The HCL is 15 years old - I'll review our progress to date and ask for help in planning a really sweet 16th
birthday for next year. In particular I'm interested in how the community can help populate the HCL with not just systems but also more useful technical content spanning v12n, power management, FMA etc |
| Defect Tracking and OpenSolaris | Come to discuss the background of Solaris defect management, current
interoperability with OpenSolaris and general future directions. |
| Games on OpenSolaris | Using OpenSolaris doesn't mean you have to leave behind your favourite games. Contrary to popular belief, OpenSolaris today can play many popular games. The platforms represented include native, Windows, and even GNU/Linux games. We'll show you the tricks to getting games up and running and explore some of the the issues facing OpenSolaris as a game platform. We'll discuss improvements on the way and making it easier for the community to port and develop games. Of course, we'll also be demoing games! |
| SCM for Outside Committers | In this session we'll go over how Mercurial and Subversion can be used today on opensolaris.org. We'll also talk about the SCM Migration project and the plans for opening up the ON and SFW consolidations to non-Sun committers. |
| OpenSolaris Printing | The OpenSolaris Summit Printing session is intended to be an interactive discussion of current printing solutions available in OpenSolaris. There will be a brief demonstration of Presto and print-service(1m) support in snv_87 and later followed by an open discussion of the direction that we should/will take with printing support in OpenSolaris. The discussion is expected to include required features, desired features, priorities, delivery methodology and community involvement, but will go wherever it takes us. Please come prepared to voice your opinions, concerns, and desires (try to keep it to printing related topics). |
| OpenSolaris Testing and Performance Tools | Testing is an important part of software development. In order to maintain the quality of the OpenSolaris code base, we need to perform extensive testing before new code can be integrated. The OpenSolaris Testing session discusses the current testing resources available on opensolaris.org including open source test suites, self-service testing and the test farm. In addition, we will have an open discussion on performance tools led by James Howard and Bob Kasten from Intel. |
| Desktop Tech | Quick state of the Solaris desktop discussion/presentation followed by brainstorming around community priorities in light of the Solaris Desktop gaps document (http://opensolaris.org/os/project/jds/documents/desktop_gaps/) and how to leverage Solaris unique features on the desktop. |
Attendance List
Summit registration is effectively FULL. If you think you should attend, please email Jesse.Silver@sun.com before registering. We have a few spots left, but they may have caveats attached (Sunday only, etc..). Thank you!

| Sriram Natarajan | Site Hosting on Open Solaris | Why any one should choose Open Solaris to host web sites ? Anyone interested in taking the reins (or just helping)? (-benr, Happy to help.) | |
| Glynn Foster, Jyri Virkki | Branding packages | With the introduction of the OpenSolaris, and the fact that other distributions are likely to want to derive themselves from the package base, it makes sense to be easily able to swap branding packages in to replace other branding - what's the best way of doing this, and what interfaces can we provide to the distro contructor to make this easier? | |
| Ben Rockwood | Directory & Auth Systems | Discussion around Kerberos, LDAP, AD, et al, and their future in OpenSolaris. | |
| Ben Rockwood | Solaris Roadmap | Discussion regarding Sun's future plans for the Solaris OE, including OpenSolaris, Solaris 10, Solaris Next, and SX:CR/DE releases. | |
| Ben Rockwood | The Future of Jumpstart | Jumpstart / NetBoot could do with a facelift. I propose a roundtable discussion about Solaris provisioning, needs and desires, and new ideas to improve the existing Jumpstart methodology. |

| 34 | Shivakumar(Shiv) | Nokia Siemens Networks | I co-ordinate the activities of BOSUG. I am part of the BeleniX team, working towards bringing the joy of opensolaris technologies to the desktop. In my professional life, I have in the recent past been working on Radio Access technologies for the telecom major, Nokia Siemens Networks. | Shiv | |
| 35 | James Liu | Sun Microsystems | Semi-oldtimer at Sun working with ISVs and now IHVs, for, what, around 13 years now. In fact, I'm working with Intel these days, mostly with their LAN Access Division these days and helping with driver development. (Hi Dave!) At the last summit, I had a LOT of fun fishing with Stuart K. and Mike D. at the Santa Cruz Wharf early in the morning (before sessions started). I plan to do that again. Folks are welcome to wake up early and fish. I'll supply all gear and no license needed on CA Saltwater Public Piers. | gdude | |
| 47 | Mike Kupfer | Sun Microsystems | I'm one of the 3 (soon to be 5) OpenSolaris infrastructure developers. Before that I worked for 12 years on the Solaris implementation of NFS. | 48 | John Plocher | Sun Microsystems | Started out at Microport Systems in the mid '80s doing SysV on '286s and was peripherally involved with the Jolitz'sBSD work. I moved over to Sun in '89 to work on X/NeWS and the SysVr4/BSD work that became Solaris 2.0, worked on Netra admin, Netscape and Clustering... Jumped ship to go to an internet yellow pages startup (BigBook), and when it crashed came back to Sun to work on system admin tools (SMC, Lockhart ...). Started out as an ARC intern/member/chair and eventually took on the full time job of supporting the ARC process itself. I'm spending my time now trying to redefine the role of the ARCs in light of OpenSolaris, OpenSource and changing product development dynamics. When not obsessed with work, our family spends its weekends restoring the 92 year old railroad caboose in our back yard. | plocher | |
