What is the difference between OpenSolaris, Solaris Express, Solaris 10, etc.?
In order from stable to bleeding edge:
- Solaris 10
- The officially supported Sun distribution. This is a free download, and we will release binary patches, updates, etc. etc. In the future, when you see S10u1 (Solaris 10 Update 1), think of these as service pack releases that add new features and fix bugs for the main Solaris 10 distribution.
- Solaris Updates
- These are updated versions of an official Solaris FCS release. Solaris updates are officially known by the month and year they come out. (Eg: Solaris 10 update 11/06) But during the development process you never quite know what month is the right one to use. So inside Sun, these are known as update 1, update 2, etc. When bugs are marked fixed, they are marked as "fixed in update N". It's often very useful to know what the mapping is between the official name and the internal name. See also: Solaris Updates Table
- OpenSolaris
- This is probably best analogous to Linux's kernel.org. It includes the source code to the ON (OS/Net) consolidation, which contains the kernel (like kernel.org) as well as other user-land utilities/tools (unlike kernel.org). The current release is 2008.05
- Solaris Express
- The official Sun bleeding-edge bits (as opposed to the OpenSolaris bleeding-edge bits). These are provided primarily for customers interested in testing out new features of the new Solaris release without the total cutting-edge-ness of the Solaris Express: Community Edition. Updated at a frequency less than that of the Community Edition.
- Solaris Express Community Edition
- The super bleeding-edge bits - the latest internal build within Sun - what will eventually be Solaris 11, currently codenamed Nevada.
- OpenSolaris 2008.11
- The OpenSolaris bleeding edge.
