The detailed process for gaining OpenSolaris "Contributor" or "Core Contributor" status is not specified in the OpenSolaris constitution. Individual projects and communities are free to choose individual criteria for this. This proposed criteria for the Desktop Community is as followed.
Steps to proceed
1. Affiliate yourself to the Desktop community here [1]. 2. Fill in the on-line form to apply for the status of Contributor/Core Contributor (TBD) 3. The application will be reviewed or approved accordingly by the working committee and the exiting Core Contributors.
In order to help you to obtain the status of Contributors or Core Contributors, the following roles are listed with a brief description of area of possible involvements. Contributions to the OpenSolaris desktop community can be made through of the followings role (but not limited to):
1. Developer The primary group of the desktop community is probably developer. One way we access user's contributions is through the following contributions:
o New features development project endorsed by the Desktop Community o Inclusion of new modules through said, SFE or others for the Desktop o Bug fixing patches (in OpenSolaris and up-stream)
2. Designer (User Interface/Experience, System) Person who provides significant design to User Interface or System that contributes to a positive Desktop experience. (E.g. UI design, icons design, sounds design, multimedia design...)
3. Quality Assurance Person who have logged bugs regularly and significant number of bugs on the OpenSolaris's Desktop.
4. Documentation Writer
Person who has written quality technical blogs, user guides, articles relevant to the Desktop communities.
5. Translator
Person who has made quality and substantial new translation for Desktop project(s).
6. Deployer
Person who has deployed significant OpenSolaris Desktop, not OpenSolaris in real world.
7. Evangelist
High profile individual who primary role is to evangelize the use of the components from
the desktop communities.
8. Project Coordinator
Person who is familiar with Desktop technologies who is envisioned to initiates,
motivates, and accomplishes cross functional/communities Desktop projects. This person facilitates cooperation, data sharing and coordination between desktop and other communities.
Your application will be processed by a working committee oversee by existing Core Contributors.
Contributor Criteria
1. Non-trivial contributions have been made in the area mentioned above. 2. Desire to continue contributions in the area of expertise.
Core Contributor Criteria
1. Already granted Contributor status.
2. Significant non-trivial contributions have been made in the respective area of expertise.
3. Desire for in-depth involvement in the Desktop community in the Open Source context.
(evidence or trend to show such level of involvement).
4. Actively involved in decision making that impact the direction and formulation of the Desktop community [*]
5. Two References to back up applications
- The primary privilege that the Core Contributor over Contributor is the right to vote in the OpenSolaris related matters. It is the therefore the responsibility of the Core Contributors to be actively involved in voting matters.
The Desktop community recommend that desktop core contributors stay active in the desktop mailing lists or otherwise stay current on developments and needs in the OpenSolaris desktop community.
The granting of the status of Contributors and Core Contributors will be carried by the working committee and existing Core Contributors to be constitutional valid.
